Microsoft will hold a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7, 2026, at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET), its first major Windows event since May 2024. The event will highlight “how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC,” with CEO Satya Nadella, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, and Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri all confirmed to attend.
We expect to hear more information about the Surface Laptop Ultra, the NVIDIA RTX Spark chip powering it, and the PC ecosystem built around local AI.
On May 31, 2026, Microsoft made a bombshell of an announcement with the Surface Laptop Ultra, featuring a design that looks classy and minimal and yet packs in a ton of ports and impressive cooling, making us believe it is Microsoft’s proper answer to the MacBook Pro.
On the same day, halfway across the world, the chip that would power the Surface Laptop Ultra was announced: the NVIDIA RTX Spark. Together, Microsoft and NVIDIA plan to “Reinvent Windows PCs for the Age of Personal AI.”
A couple of days later, at Build 2026, Microsoft mentioned changes in Windows 11 built specifically for RTX Spark, including a new Workload Profile Scheduling system to spread tasks across the chip’s 20 CPU cores and a tuned Prism emulation layer for x86 apps on Arm.
Now, all of this is coming together at a major event three weeks from today.
Save the date for the Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark
For the past few weeks, the Surface social media team has been busy putting out teasers for the Ultra, showing off its cooling design and port selection and hinting at its local AI capabilities as well. Today, we also got a teaser with the caption “Get ready for the next step.”
Surface corporate vice president Brett Ostrum mentioned the Surface Laptop Ultra as “the most powerful Surface Laptop ever built”. It pairs an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 128GB of unified memory and full CUDA support, and Microsoft says it can run AI models with up to 120 billion parameters locally. The company promised availability by fall 2026, and from the looks of it, they are keeping that promise.
Microsoft has also shown off the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop with the same chip for developers working with local AI models, and we may get more details at the October 7 event.
Other laptop makers, including Dell, Lenovo, and Asus, have already announced their own RTX Spark devices. We have already leaked the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9n and the Lenovo Yoga 9n 2-in-1. The OEMs are yet to publish real benchmarks.
Microsoft has spent months tuning Windows 11 specifically for this hardware, and that makes this new Windows + Surface event all the more exciting.
Don’t expect Windows 12 to show up here
Despite the Windows branding on the invite, do not expect a new version of the operating system. As we reported, Microsoft already clarified in May that Windows 12 was not on the table when speculation first started swirling around this same hardware.
October 7 marks Microsoft’s first major Windows event since the Copilot+ PC launch in May 2024, but its aftermath did not go anywhere close to how Microsoft hoped.
Reviewers came away unimpressed with the on-device AI features Microsoft promised; Recall drew heavy backlash over privacy, and even the dedicated Copilot key ended up opening little more than a web page for most of its existence, only to gain a few remap options, with recent ones being the Context Menu and Right Ctrl.
Local AI on RTX Spark hardware gives Microsoft an opportunity to rewrite everything, assuming the agentic features it keeps promising ship this time. Yusuf Mehdi, who leads consumer marketing for Windows and Copilot, pledged to spend his final year at Microsoft reimagining Windows for what he calls the agentic era before he leaves the company.
October 7 looks like the first real test of whether that evolution has anything to show for it.
